During the weekend of 18-19 July, the garden hosted the inauguration of "The Jimmy Smart Memorial Bursary". This has been funded in memory of the man who developed the gardens, Dr Smart. The bursary aims to help and provide funds for working gardeners to see plants growing in the wild overseas and to visit other gardens around the world.

Administered by the Royal Horticultural Society, the bursary was launched by the well known television personality, Roy Lancaster OBE, who talked about Dr Smart's time at Marwood Hill and the creation of the gardens.

Lady Anne Berry, founder of the Rosemoor garden, also talked about her friendship with Dr Smart and how both gardens had been established and developed together.

Many friends and horticultural associates were present including Sir Richard Carew-Pole, president of the Royal Horticultural Society, who spoke of the role which bursaries can play in furthering gardeners' education.

A walk in the gardens was followed by tea in the marquee.

The International Camellia Society awarded Marwood Hill Garden the "Gardens of Excellence" award for its collection of Camellias, along with Mount Edgecombe and Antony House. These 3 gardens are the only ones in Britain to receive the award. They join four gardens in Americca, one in Germany, the Melbourne Botanic garden in Australia and two in Japan. The collection of camellias at Marwood Hill numbers over 800 and includes plants and cuttings which Dr Smart collected from various gardens during his travels around the world.
